Første utgave ble utgitt i 1991som et tverreligiøst prosjekt etter konferansen "Assembly for World's Religions".
I denne første utgaven skriver professor Ninian Smart i forordet:
"This antology is compiled in the spirit of reverence for all spiritual paths.Such a spirit is needed if we are to live in peace with one another. That is not always easy, I would not underestimate the tensions which can occur among brothers and sisters of appearantly rival faiths. But gradually, as we appraoch a world culture , we shall overcome such tensions and learn to converse and argue gently with one another. An anthology such as this will help such conversations".
